Urban and Peri-urban Agriculture

This paper explores the major issues arising from urban and peri-urban agriculture which are central to FAO's mandate in member countries. They are how to: · provide adequate access to nutritious food for the growing urban populations of the developing world; · efficiently integrate urban and peri-urban agriculture with rural agriculture (in general they are not substitutes for each other); · develop land and water policies that account for agricultural production in urban and peri-urban areas; and · guide dynamic agricultural practices within and outside cities towards sustainability goals (economic, social, and environmental).
